Beyond Public Speech and Symbols: Explorations in the Rhetoric of Politicians and the Media

Excerpt

In preparing this volume we had several audiences in mind. First, the volume is aimed at communication researchers and graduate students interested in the various aspects of political and public discourse and the role language plays in politics in different cultures. Second, the volume should benefit scholars interested in area studies, such as traditional societies (Japan, China, Venezuela), Western societies (the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, and the European Union), and societies in transition (Ukraine, Israel). At the same time, the volume is written for the general reader as well as the specialist. We have attempted to avoid technical jargon and statistical discussions so that the book could be read not only by professionals in related fields but also by persons who are interested in current developments in media, culture, technology, and world politics. We sought to present a comprehensive coverage of the state of the arts as well as contemporary research and thinking. We hope this book will provide a firmer and broader source of information.

Editing a volume such as this is never accomplished without help. Many of the authors presented preliminary versions of their chapters at academic meetings such as the Annual Scientific Meeting of the International Society of Political Psychology and the meetings of the National Speech Communication Association, the American Political Science Association, and the International Studies Association. We want to thank the commentators, especially Henk Dekker, for his most useful comments during the ISPP Montreal meeting.

Sincere thanks are due to Dr. James T. Sabin, Director of the Academic Research and Development at Greenwood Publishing Group, who has taken a keen interest in this book and its companion volume, Politically . . .
