The spread of Marxist communism around the world has been nothing short of phenomenal. A few numbers make this point dramatically. There are today nearly a hundred communist parties active throughout the globe. There are nearly twenty communist countries with a combined population of almost two billion people, more than a third of the people on the planet. Yet communist ideology is only one hundred and fifty years old.* The “bible” of all communist parties and nations, The Communist Manifesto, was published in 1848. The first modern-day communist party, the Bolshevik Party, was organized in Russia in 1903. The first communist state, the USSR, appeared in 1917 and remained virtually the only communist nation until the Eastern European states and China became communist following World War II. In the history of mankind, no group of people, be they philosophers, politicians, or members of religious sects, has changed so much of the world in so little time as have the communists.

Who are the communists? In what do they believe?

Communists are members of a political party committed to realizing the kind of society described in the works of Karl Marx. Communists trace their ideological roots to Marx. Although Marx and his lifelong friend and collaborator, Friedrich Engels, gave incomplete and sometimes superficial descriptions of a future communist society, they inspired millions of people with their vision of an international society which would be highly industrialized and which would be controlled by one class of
