Synopsis

Three Dutch biologists and physicians explore the boundaries of medicine and psychiatry in a cultural setting, with essays on the biological, social, and political effects of environment on health and disease. Potential beneficial effects of diet therapies are a theme throughout the text, with emphasis on omega-3 fatty acids. The limitations of evidence-based medicine are explored, as well. Case studies include the biology of migraine; conventional versus alternative medicine; and religion and near-death experiences. Annotation (c)2003 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
