Day One & Beyond: Practical Matters for New Middle-Level Teachers

Excerpt

I don’t expect to be the most fantastic teacher on this earth, although I would
love to be. I also don’t expect to be the worst, and if I thought I was, I’d quit
in a heartbeat. First and foremost, I will make every effort to connect with
each of my students. Without a relationship and a trust developed, how can
anyone be open to learning, and how can I effectively teach? I will do my best,
and hope that my students learn. I will strive to be a lifelong learner so I can
improve my teaching abilities, and I hope I can inculcate that love of learning
in my students.

—Joanne Payling, eighth-grade language arts teacher, Pleasanton Middle School

As many novice skydivers take their first jump, they shout at the top of their lungs:

“YAHOO!!!”
“COWABUNGA!!!”
“REMEMBER THE ALAMO!!!”
“I LOVE YOU, MOM!!!”
“LIVE FREE OR DIE!!!”
“I’M A BIRD, A PLANE. NO, I’M SUPERMAN!!!”
“WHAT’S THIS CORD FOR???”
