Southern Indians have experienced much change in the last half of the 20th century. In rapid succession since World War II, they have passed through the testing field of land claims litigation begun in the 1950s, played upon or retreated from the civil rights movement of the 1960s, seen the proliferation of "wannabe" Indian groups in the 1970s, and created innovative tribal enterprises-such as high-stakes bingo and gambling casinos-in the 1980s. The Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act of 1990 stimulated a cultural renewal resulting in tribal museums and heritage programs and a rapprochement with their western kinsmen removed in "Old South" days. Today Canada and the Netherlands enjoy a close relationship filled with warmth and friend
ship. These two nations, separated by an ocean, did not always have such close ties. In
fact, there had been nominal contact between the two countries prior to the Second World
War. Yet a bond between them was forged in the darkest days of the twentieth century,
bringing them together in a common struggle for freedom.

Freedom. Its value is precious, and unrealized until it is gone. It is essential to
human existence; the loss of freedom is overshadowed only by the loss of life itself. For
the people of the Netherlands, the loss of both became a grim reality in the Second
World War with the brutal invasion and occupation of their homeland by the Nazis. But
they struggled through those horrible years, not only to survive, but also to battle
stoically for freedom.

For Canadians, the Second World War was a clash between ideologies: democracy
versus totalitarianism. They faced a foe whose quest for world domination threatened
everyone, and it was essential to stop them. As a member of the British Commonwealth,
Canada committed itself to fighting for king and country. The outcome was uncertain,
and as the tides of history changed, young men in Canadian uniforms found themselves
on Dutch soil, battling for the freedom of strangers, sacrificing themselves for an
oppressed people.
