The edition of Alexander III’s charters presented here consists of some 330 documents, of which 175 survive in full or almost full texts. Some ninety-six of these are single parchment sheet originals; another seventy-nine are preserved in medieval cartularies or more recent transcriptions. A handful of deeds survive in more than a single copy, produced either in duplicate, or as original parchment sheets that were copied into cartularies in the medieval period. In a few other cases the originals have been lost and the editors have had to depend on postmedieval transcriptions of their contents. The edition includes also a calendar of a further 155 deeds, described below as ‘lost acts’, that survive only as fragments or in incidental references.
