The publication of this Volume marks the fifteenth uninterrupted year of intensive archival and critical work conducted under the auspices of the Recovering the U.S. Hispanic Literary Heritage Project. In November 1990, the project director, Nicolás Kanellos, convened a small group of scholars at the National Humanities Center in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina, to lay out the blueprint for an ambitious research agenda: the recovery of texts written by Hispanics from the sixteenth century to 1960 in what eventually became the United States of America. This effort entailed not only identifying material that had been buried, sometimes for centuries, in archives, libraries, and historical societies all across the nation and throughout Latin America, but also its indexing and digitization, as well as the dissemination of some of the most significant examples in scholarly editions. At this point in the Project’s endeavors, and due in part to the support of a ten-year grant from the Rockefeller Foundation, this effort has yielded impressive results. These range from the thousands of indexed and digitized newspapers and other printed sources housed in the Recovery Project archives at the University of Houston to the nearly thirty-five editions of once forgotten texts, whose current republication fosters new understandings of U.S., Latino/a, and Latin American literary and cultural histories.

From the outset, the founders of the Project were acutely aware that forging a broad scholarly community of readers and interpreters was crucial to this undertaking.
