This monograph is based on research conducted in Indonesia in 1971 and 1972. At its inception the study was planned as an investigation of political integration in contemporary Indonesia, based on a comparison of North and South Sulawesi. In the course of my research I discovered that it would be possible to obtain considerable information, much of it from interviews, on two rebellions which had occurred in these areas: Darul Islam (Islamic State) in South Sulawesi; and Permesta, which began in Makassar in 1957 as part of a general regional movement affecting many parts of the archipelago, but continued in North Sulawesi in association with the Sumatra-based PRRI rebellion of 1958–1961 It seemed that a detailed study of these rebellions would cast much light on center-region relations in Indonesia, and on the nature of disintegrative impulses. In the course of writing I found it necessary to limit the dissertation based on this research to South Sulawesi, and the course and impact of the two rebellions there (“Tradition, Islam and Rebellion: South Sulawesi 19501965,” Cornell University, 1974). This monograph is concerned with the Permesta movement and rebellion, and although some consideration is given to the inception of the movement in South Sulawesi, the focus of the study is on the course of the rebellion in North Sulawesi.

It must be noted that the perspective of this study is at the regional level, and that while it has been possible to draw on published accounts of national politics of the period, there are no local, village-level studies available to make possible a detailed assessment of the impact of the rebellion on the lives of the bulk of the people in the affected area.

The account which follows is based largely on interviews with participants in Permesta; in most cases they are cited in footnotes, but in a few instances interviewees requested that they not be identified . . .
