Excerpt

When Harry Pleket retired, his pupils felt he deserved a collection of essays written especially for him. After all, he had not only been a fine and distinguished scholar, but also a dedicated and accomplished teacher. We were made to share his early-morning enthusiasm for a recently published inscription, or his lunch-time arguments about the value of comparative ancient history. Whatever the topic, his thinking was extraordinarily rich and stimulating. He was a hands-on and efficient PhD supervisor who liked to guide where it mattered most: choice of subject and quality of argument. When he disagreed, he would put up a spirited fight. However, he always tried to win with arguments rather than by imposing his formal authority.

Most of us were supervised by him for a Leiden doctorate. In some cases his formal position was different, for example because the doctorate was obtained at another institution. We all feel, however, that he has been a major influence on our work. Inevitably, not all his doctoral students were able to contribute. As editors we have tried to be patient and to include as many as possible.

We wish to acknowledge our gratitude to the Faculty of Arts and Letters of Leiden University for financial support to correct the English of some of the contributions. We also wish to thank Rosamund Annetts for doing this so admirably. In the final stages Luuk de Ligt was of great help with the copy-editing. Mrs. Marga van Bon, secretary in the Department of Roman Law at the University of Utrecht, did an invaluable job in producing the page lay-out. With their generous assistance the final hurdles could be taken. We would also like to thank Michiel Klein Swormink of Brill Academic Publishers for publishing the book so efficiently.

Over the years Harry Pleket has been generous to us with his time and knowledge, and we are grateful for his intellectual inspiration and support. We also wish to thank him and Toos privately. This volume is not only a tribute to a great scholar, but also to a loyal friend, and a generous human being, and not necessarily in that particular order.
