Nursing Workforce Development: Strategic State Initiatives

This book looks at ""long-term"" fixes being developed in response to the nursing shortage, through regional collaborations of government, health care institutions, and schools of nursing. It is based on the premise that factors around the supply and demand for nurses are locally based, since nurses tend to be educated and work in the same geographic area. Successful strategies implemented in many states are provided as ""exemplars"" throughout the book, which include collaborations between service and education to provide greater educational mobility and programs for workplace satisfaction. The book grew out of the Robert Wood Johnson-funded Colleagues in Caring Project, which was created to help mobilize regional cooperation around nursing workforce issues. The book includes practical information on:

  • How to Obtain Funding for Nursing Workforce Coalitions
  • Gathering Nursing Workforce Data
  • Redesigning the Nursing Workforce
  • Influencing Nursing Workforce Policy
  • Strategies for Nursing Workforce Development
  • The Future of the Nursing Workplace

The trouble with our times is that the future is not what it used to be.

Be prepared for a breathtaking inside view of a courageous and innovative group of nursing colleagues who have rewritten traditional rules and processes to launch a national change process around a nationwide nursing shortage of unprecedented proportion. Utilizing an agenda created and managed at the grassroots level along with technological networking and innovation, a national environment for nursing was co-created which was nimble, adaptable, and relevant to people in the context of their lives. This book offers a blueprint for designing such a network.

Be empowered by the wisdom and leadership demonstrated at every level of the process. The models reflected in these chapters replace familiar patterns of power and privilege, which have existed for civilizations, with flexible social networks that fostered social entrepreneurship as a dynamic and effective vehicle for change. Tools and strategies provided in these exciting chapters guide groups beyond executing a preset agenda created by an expert panel, to strategies that establish dynamic and collaborative teams which co-create and adapt agendas at the grassroots level. The solution to any problem lies within it.

Be challenged by the way that workforce development, as represented in this book, has transcended the traditional boundaries of status, role, functional affiliation and geographic location that for years have defined and controlled our work. Timely and innovative use of web-based technologies and other networking tools and resources allowed for real-time dialogue, exploration, and co-creation, as well as quick adaptation around what did not work. Book authors model boundary-less behavior as information access and decisionmaking authority was moved from a ‘filtering outside expert’ directly to the members living the issue. In real-time they would . . .
