By Hispanic theater in the United States we mean many things. We refer to theater scripts written entirely in Spanish, theater scripts written entirely in English, and bilingual scripts which combine these languages to various extents. By Hispanic theater we also mean theater that addresses Puerto Rican, Cuban American, and Mexican American life, as well as Hispanic Intercultural life of various descriptions: exile life, life of nostalgia for the past, life that is trying to bring the past into the present, life that is trying to find a future. And sometimes we mean all of the above. So it becomes evident that reading this sort of anthology offers the possibility of considering the scripts for production as plays.

There are a great many possibilities of production and staging offered by each script. A script is not a play. It is a suggestion for the play the reader can imagine to happen—and the magic word is not script, but happen. Until the moment of the play the script is an unfulfilled set of suggestions. Reading all these scripts together, however, presents the reader with a dimension none of the playwrights . . .
