The idea of putting together a volume with case studies of political parties in South Asia first took shape in 1995, when Kay Lawson paid a brief visit to the South Asia Institute of Heidelberg. Since then, the idea has gone through several metamorphoses. A panel on political parties under the auspices of the Research Committee on Political Sociology of the International Political Science Association and the International Sociological Association which met in Seoul, 1998, provided the first occasion to put a few potential authors together around the theme. But it was the workshop on the “Asianization of Western Politics” held in Nottingham, 2001, supported by the European Science Foundation and the School of Politics, the University of Nottingham, that brought the group of authors together around a common theme.

The volume, which brings the papers presented at this workshop together, is thus the result of a long process, which has acquired a life of its own. We have acquired many debts in the course of its conceptualization and final appearance in book form. Our thanks go first and foremost to the Committee for Political Sociology of the International Political Science Association and International Sociological Association, the School of Politics at the University of Nottingham, and the South Asia Institute at the University of Heidelberg, which provided the institutional infrastructure for our meetings. The twin imperative of being up-to-date with the fast-moving landscape of South Asian politics on the one hand, and maintaining a minimum comparability in terms of the time frame of the case studies, have inevitably led to frequent demands for revision and long delays in terms of processing the material for publication.
