Deleuze and Education

Synopsis

These 13 essays address the broad territory of educational theory and philosophy of education. Unfolding Deleuze is at once a deterritorialisation and reterritorialisation of his philosophy. Perhaps this is what this book is about: constructing a Deleuzian transversal, which is particularly suited to diverse educational contexts. Unfolding Deleuze means to deterritorialise Deleuze while simultaneously reterritorialising him in a new context partaking of three interconnected problematic fields: educational theory, philosophy of education, and pedagogical practice. the chapters presented in this volume comprise a transversal line of flight along which, in Deleuze’s spirit, a multiplicity of new concepts are created – concepts that will give us a new Sense of teaching and learning. Yet, these concepts may have always already been implicated in their virtual form in the field of education; this book unfolds or explicates them. Indeed Deleuze conceptualised the fold as the inside of the outside. Education is to be understood broadly as both formal – inside a classroom – and informal – outside the walls of a typical classroom but inside ‘a’ life, explicated in experience and culture.

The popularity of Deleuze’s philosophy across disciplines is highly visible, especially in the areas of cultural studies, politics, gender studies and the like. While less visible in education, his body of work has been a subject of research and practical applications that have been continuously traced by the editors of this volume in their earlier works (e.g., Semetsky 2004, 2006, 2008; Masny 2010, 2012; Semetsky and Masny 2011). If we were to examine the programmes of the international conferences devoted to Deleuze Studies, there was one panel on the topic of education at the first conference in Cardiff in 2008; at the second conference held in 2009 in Cologne there were three panels, and there were several presentations at the conference in Amsterdam in 2010 and in Copenhagen in 2011. the fifth conference held in 2012 in New Orleans also had three education panels.
