Excerpt

Le Chevalier deliberé is the most important poetic work of Olivier de La
Marche. In the late fifteenth century and through virtually all of the
sixteenth it enjoyed great popularity, as evidenced by its reproduction in
at least eighteen manuscripts and numerous printings in French as well
as subsequent translations or adaptations into Spanish, Dutch, and Eng
lish. There have been no modern critical editions or translations of the
poem. A reprint appeared in 1842, based on the undated text printed
in Schiedam, Holland, near the end of the fifteenth century. The editor
added the instructions for the illustration of the poem and claimed to
have consulted four manuscripts and two other early editions, but he
did not identify them; the work contains no notes or variants. The
Schiedam text was reproduced in London in 1898 for the Bibliographi
cal Society, with a brief preface, a summary of the poem, and an English
translation of the author’s directions for the illustration of the poem; it
was again reprinted in Paris in 1923 with an introduction including a
modern French version of those instructions and an extensive bibliogra
phy. A facsimile edition of the very imperfect 1488 Paris printing of the
text was published by the Library of Congress in 1946. All these fac
simile editions are long out of print. As a result, the text is largely inac
cessible and very little critical attention has been paid to it. This was an
important text in its day and does not deserve the near-total oblivion
into which it has fallen in recent times.
