Thursday, May 21, 1998. On this day my story begins.

My wife and I were visiting our good friends Wendell and Pam McChord in Dayton, Ohio. That evening Wendell showed me his study which also serves as his library. Wendell is a dentist and a quintessential history buff with a special interest in eighteenth century events in Kentucky and Ohio. He also delves into genealogy and has found that his wife and I are distant cousins. That evening he was showing me excerpts from his well stocked and well organized collection of historical literature. One subject caught my eye; it had a byline that included the White Indians. There followed a brief text; it was only a paragraph or two, but it piqued my interest. Somewhere, sometime, I’ve long forgotten where or when, I had previously read something about the White Indians. It had been only an anecdote, no more than a written rumor. But now the text in front of me teased me and led me on by giving a reference. the reference was to a book by Richard Deacon, titled Madoc and the Discovery of America.

I soon obtained Deacon’s book and read it with intensity. I found it to be a fascinating and well-documented story about Madoc, a Welsh prince who brought hundreds of settlers to America in 1170 and 1171. Other books followed and Wendell fed my new obsession by sending several articles that he had located, some in obscure places. As I read about these people, their story became a puzzle to me: a puzzle in which some of the pieces did not fit. I became convinced that there were misinterpretations, inaccuracies, and faulty . . .
