French Cultural Debates

Synopsis

This collection of essays considers some of the most important and lively cultural debates in contemporary France. Debates on gender, same-sex relationships, the culture of business practices, food, cinema, intellectuals, science, popular culture, and popular music are all dealt with in the context of the tradition of French Republicanism. As the collection shows, a cultural debate is, in some ways, a classic French form of public engagement, whereby intellectuals or key players such as the activist Jose Bove become associated with key values, or even become iconic figures drawing on France's rich heritage of political and cultural symbolism. What emerges from the collection is an urgent need to update the values of the Republic, coupled with a widespread desire to protect French exceptionalism against the threats posed by economic and cultural globalization.
