[Music, the sounds of children laughing and playing, sounds of machinery and work. During the following barrage from MR. GRADGRIND, the scene morphs into a classroom.]

MURDERING THE INNOCENTS

MR. GRADGRIND: I am Thomas Gradgrind, owner of this school. A man of fact and calculations. With a rule and a pair of scales, and the multiplication table always in his pocket, children, ready to weigh and measure any parcel of human nature, and tell you exactly what it comes to. Now, what I want is Facts. Teach these boys and girls nothing but Facts, Mr. M’Choakumchild!
