Is the university possible?

Is the university possible? Nothing less than this is the issue before us in this book. I shall argue that the university is in considerable difficulty but that we may just be able to sustain it.

The Western university has not been merely a set of institutions that just happened to bear the name ‘university’. the term ‘university’ has come to stand for a set of universal aspirations, principally turning on the sense of an institution that embodies and promotes a life of reason. We might be tempted to add to ‘reason’ other terms such as ‘openness’, ‘generosity’, ‘grace’ and ‘compassion’, but terms like these are a spelling out of what is meant by a life of reason.

With some justification, such a sense of reason could fairly have been presupposed to reside not just in the manifesto that the university wrote for itself but also in its practices, such as teaching and research and the conversations of the academics, and in the university as an institution. Reason was to be found both horizontally across the disciplines that had claimed shelter within it and vertically, from the interaction between a tutor and a student to the university’s decision-making and policy-making processes.

All such presuppositions about the university as a site of reason are in difficulty. There are a number of ways in which this can be said to be so, but there is a particular form of non-rationality that will be before us here. in essence, this feature of the contemporary university is simple and stark: it is that universities have become ideological, being beset by many ideologies. Ideologies that we shall examine include those of competition, entrepreneurialism, quality, managerialism, research and even the idea of the academic community itself. These are but case studies, drawn from a longer list that might have included access, inclusivity and multiculturalism.
