The Promises to the Fathers: Studies on the Patriarchal Narratives

Excerpt

My study “Types of Narrative in Genesis,” published in German by Kaiser-Verlag in 1964 in Forschung am Alten Testament as Volume 24 of the Theologische Bücherei series, dealt with the promises to the patriarchs and the narratives containing these promises. The approaches sketched out there needed to be followed up, which I have attempted to do in the present work. Since the latter refers in many places to the earlier study and presupposes it, it is reprinted here as Part A; the 1964 publication is out of print. No changes have been made except for minor corrections. I wish to express my thanks to the Kaiser-Verlag for permission to reprint this material.

Parts B (“The Promises to the Fathers,” minus section I) and C (“The Significance of the Ugaritic Texts for the Patriarchal Narratives”) were delivered with minor changes as lectures before the Spanish Exegetical Society at Bilbao in April, 1974. I am grateful to my Spanish colleagues for a stimulating time together.

The notes to Part C, the Ugaritic parallels, were produced by Dr. K. Günther of the Center for Ugaritic Studies at Heidelberg, to whom I wish to take this opportunity to express my thanks.
