Information collected for this book comes from the scientific literature, including professional guidelines, expert review, peer-reviewed journals, and clinical communications. The author reviews and summarizes this literature, given his research and clinical experience, including extensive work with children, adolescents, and adults with ADHD. The book follows the development of the field, with an initial description of the history of ADHD and its treatments followed by chapters outlining the core nature of the disorder and associated problems. A chapter on treatment follows a review of the drug development process so that readers have a sense of how treatments become available for a given condition. The book ends with discussion of recent advances in the field, including genetic investigations, brain imaging, and the understanding of how ADHD may continue into adulthood.
