Excerpt

Misconceptions and stereotypes about college students’ sexual activities abound. For example, some social critics have concluded that college students have abandoned dating in favor of casual sexual encounters. While it is true that the courtship approach to dating has largely fallen out of favor, most students still dream of finding their soul mates and eventually becoming involved in long-term committed relationships. Clearly, some things have changed, including the terminology that students use in reference to sex and dating (such as “hook-ups,” “sexting” over the cell phone, and being “sexiled” by an inconsiderate roommate). Yet many things have not changed. There is, however, no single source on the sexual attitudes and practices of college student. This volume intends to fill the void.

The vast majority of sex research continues to rely on college student samples. For example, in one recent issue of the Journal of Sex Research, five of the nine empirical studies relied on college student samples. Yet no single book has attempted to organize the relevant research findings. This edited volume offers reviews of the essential topics related to college students’ sexuality. Drawing on contributors with expertise in the topics, the volume provides an up-to-date summary of the research on sexuality in college. As a reference, the volume is aimed at a broad audience. Anyone interested in the topic of sex in college should find it useful and timely. Sexologists, health educators, college teachers, and administrators, in addition to graduate and undergraduate students in a wide range of disciplines, should appreciate the research reviews on topics ranging from dating patterns and romantic relationships to such . . .
