Starting from Scratch: Building a Teen Library Program

In order to develop a young adult department from the ground up, librarians need to be informed about a myriad of interrelated tasks and responsibilities: creating policies, purchasing materials, program scheduling, outreach, and budgeting. Even for libraries that already have teen-oriented materials within their facilities, keeping them current and fresh is a challenge, especially when budget or physical space is an issue.

"Starting from Scratch: Building a Teen Library Program" is an instrumental resource for librarians who are either entering an established teen program with no previous experience, or establishing a new teen program in a library. It covers all steps in the process of becoming a successful teen librarian, from getting the job and advocating for a teen department to adding qualified staff and ongoing professional development.

They also should be provided equal access to library services and those services should be equal to those offered to other library customers. The wide array of titles in this series supports these beliefs. We are very excited about Starting from Scratch as the newest addition to our series. Many teen librarians may find the task of adding new service as daunting, but Sarah Ludwig has provided a valuable resource with a sensible and practical approach that gets the job done.

We are proud of our association with Libraries Unlimited/ABC-CLIO, which continues to prove itself as the premier publisher of books to help library staff serve teens. This series has succeeded because our authors know the needs of those library employees who work with young adults. Without exception, they have written useful and practical handbooks for library staff.

We hope you find this book, as well as our entire series, to be informative, providing you with valuable ideas as you serve teens and that this work will further inspire you to do great things to make teens welcome in your library. If you have an idea for a title that could be added to our . . .
