Synopsis

The aim of this book is to deepen and discipline the minister's life of private devotion. Basically the theme is the minster's calling, and a different aspect of this calling governs the order of devotion for each day of the week.

Excerpt

Minister’s Prayer Book, first published in 1959, met a clear and distinct ecumenical need for a devotional manual for pastors, relating prayer and meditation to the work of the ministry. The value of the book continues, for in an increasingly secularized society pastors more than ever need guidance in their devotional life and spirituality. Moreover, pastors need to meditate and reflect upon the nature and work of their office, continually being recalled to its center and essence. Thus Minister’s Prayer Book has importance not only for pastors but for the health of the whole church. For this reason, and in response to continuing requests for this classic devotional volume, the publishers are pleased to bring Minister’s Prayer Book back into print.

Users should be aware that only one section of the book has been altered in the present edition. At the request of the publishers, Philip H, Pfatteicher revised the “Propers for the Church Year” (pages 59–125) to bring these into line with current understandings reflected in the Lutheran Book of Worship and the two-year daily lectionary. Page xix of the editor’s introduction must therefore be understood as applicable only to the original edition of Minister’s Prayer Book and not to the present edition. The remainder of the book, however, remains unaltered, thus preserving the original and unique character of this “pastor’s companion.”
