Excerpt

The youngest member of the theater group, a small, dark Dominican boy who was playing the role of the governor’s son, suddenly looked up from his script, a very serious look on his face, and asked me, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” I said, “Just what I am.” He nodded, satisfied by my answer, and went back to studying Ms part. When I thought about this on my way home, I was surprised to realize that I had the answer ready to such a deep question. I was 43 at the time.
