Our goal in writing this book is to spare you the difficulties that we experienced in our combined academic experience of more than seventy years. We also wanted to provide a basic text that can be used in a course meeting the requirements of the National Institutes of Health Office of Research Integrity for ethics training of graduate students and postdoctoral fellows.

Looking back on the first edition, we realized that there had been many changes due to advances in computer technology and the Internet, that we had not included some important topics, and that we had learned a great deal from our own misadventures and the tribulations of others. We also realized that while many of us have careers that are not the typical tenured professor instructing students and pursuing grant funding, our jobs still have many aspects of an academic career.

In both editions we have attempted to be gender neutral. We view sexual harassment as another form of power abuse. We have seen examples of all possible combinations of genders for abusers and abused in these situations. All are reprehensible. We believe that . . .
