Political repression is the nether side of the American tradition of constitutional liberties. It has become institutionalized in American life, an unwelcome legacy from the sometimes brutal, sometimes hysterical attacks on political dissidents. Every branch and every level of government has participated in suppressing free expression. Unfortunately, before we distance ourselves sufficiently from one assault on constitutional rights, we fall victim to the next. Keeping alive memories of those grim experiences is one antidote against their recurrence.
