Excerpt

During a time in which not only every student but every man and woman must have certain background information in order to understand the day’s news and evaluate the policies and actions of a democratic government, it is essential that there be available, in brief form, certain basic source materials concerning the outbreak, conduct, and aftermath of World War II. An effort has been made in this slim volume to provide some such material. The list includes treaties, pacts, laws, decrees, governmental acts, armistices, examples of official propaganda, conventions, authoritative narrative descriptions of special incidents, and the like. The introductory lines preceding each document are intended to provide a useful frame of reference and furnish relevant information not always easy of access. The footnote references are designed to establish the authenticity of the quoted material and to acquaint the reader with a variety of available primary sources.
