Divided Loyalties in a Doomed Empire: The French in the West : from New France to the Lewis and Clark Expedition

Synopsis

Long after La Salle and La Verendrye, Lewis and Clark blazed western trails in a multicultural enterprise involving squaw men and Metis of French descent. In the wake of the bicentennial of the Expedition, this study traces the missing link between New France and the American frontier. It capitalizes on original sources from the French National Archives, and sheds a new light on the French cultural context.
