As I was marking up the proofs for this book, I was travelling through West Yorkshire on a train. Looking up from my work, my eyes fell on one of the many small village stations. There was a sign pointing to the “General Waiting Room” alongside one inviting visitors into the “Ladies Waiting Room.” I was intrigued by this as it seemed so symbolic of how the work of feminist theologians is often perceived. One could speculate about theology being done on this side of the second coming as something like a waiting room, a space where we sit, talk, and wait for the train to arrive, for the last things to begin. Yet, why is there a general one and one for ladies? Are women not part of the general public?

This book introduces feminist theology. Feminist Theology is not separate “ladies” theology, not an academic luxury while others get on with “the real thing.” Feminist theologians seek to make a contribution, to ask critical questions of all endeavours of doing theology. This book is an invitation to take these questions seriously and to see how feminist theology aims to do theology as, for, and with the whole body of Christ.

In doing so, Scripture and Tradition have been dialogue partners which are too vital to ignore. Feminist Theology looks at a wide range of themes in Christian theology and the language used to discuss them. It invites its readers to rejoice in the diversity of voices in today’s theological landscape and shows how theology done by the whole body of Christ cannot ignore the human bodies of women and men if it wants to be true to Christ incarnate.
