This book was first published in the United Kingdom in March, 2003. I have taken the opportunity provided by the publication of this book in North America to update the text where necessary. in addition, I have revised every chapter in an effort to correct errors, make the reading more accessible, and to sharpen formulations. Some chapters, particularly Chapters 6 through 8, were greatly revised. the basic issues, however, remain the same, and genetic theories remain entrenched in the mainstream of psychiatry and psychology.
