Innovation by Design grew out of concern that organizations that at one time had been outperforming the economy by introducing newto-the-market products were now relying strictly on incremental innovation, which in many situations does not increase the size of the market

Innovation is a management discipline; it does not come about through a random or hit-and-miss approach, but it requires design. Innovation involves focusing on the organization’s mission, searching for unique opportunities, determining whether they fit the organization’s strategic direction, defining the measures for success, and continually reassessing opportunities. Innovation doesn’t require genius; but it does require total dedication in pursuit of a unique opportunity.

Design is central to the practice of management. Design is also central to the practice of innovation. Science, engineering, medicine, and architecture look to the future with knowledge of the past. These professions look at what could be and use resources to try and make something new happen. New products, new systems, and new processes involve design. Design creates change in products as well as lifestyles. Innovation comes about by implementing designs.

Innovation by Design takes a systems approach to guide the governance of organizations that create economic or social value through innovation. Developing an innovative organization does not involve any deep-seated mysteries. There are no recipes, no ten-easy-lessons, and no seven-step panacea. Successful innovation comes from understanding a coherent set of principles and guidelines and then applying them within a specific organizational context.
