Seven years have elapsed since the appearance of the second edition of this history. To gain the space required for the treatment of these momentous years it has been necessary to extend the terminal date of the first volume to 1865, the close of the Civil War. This extension, in turn, has required some compression in the discussion of the beginnings of the American people, and the omission of most of the story of the European background.
The preparation of the present edition presents the opportunity once more to incorporate in the references many significant works of recent publication, and to rewrite the text to an extent which justifies calling the edition a substantially new work. Most of the maps have also been redrawn, and for the first time illustrations are introduced. The adoption of a new format is in keeping with these new features.
