Excerpt

There is scarcely any artist whose essence and significance can be captured in a biography for all time. A historical personality appears in a new light to each succeeding generation. Prerequisite to any serious study--not mere subjective evaluation--of such a personality is an exact knowledge of his total oeuvre. The basis for musicological research was furnished by bibliographical works, like the Köchel catalogue of Mozart, or Gustav Nottebohm's investigations (impersonal in the best sense of the word) of Beethoven's sketchbooks.

The aim of the present work was to lay a foundation for further research on Arnold Schoenberg's personality and work. The Academy of Arts in Berlin hopes that, with its commission to Josef Rufer to inspect and catalogue the entire legacy of Schoenberg's work, and to issue a complete bibliography, it has taken a step in the right direction.
