During many years of writing about Canada, I have been hampered by the lack of books describing the country as a whole. Aside from necessarily inadequate school geographies, the physical makeup of Canada has been largely ignored by writers for the general public. If, for example, one wishes a book for a stranger that will tell him the sort of country Canada is, and the sort of livelihood it might provide, one will search in vain. There is Professor Griffith Taylor's excellent Canada, of course, although somewhat too technical for the average reader.

Books there are on some of the Provinces, notably Nova Scotia and Newfoundland, with a few more on particular sections of the country, such as the parts of Ontario and Quebec frequented by tourists, and the North; but they fail to give a comprehensive picture of Canada. Likewise, a great many articles have been written about various parts of the country; but, again, there is no over-all picture. The splendid accounts of explorations written by members of the Geological Survey of Canada during more than a century provide what comes nearest to a complete Canadian mosaic, but these are seen by few other than specialists. I should like, however, to express my admiration for the work of these men, among whom may be found many really great Canadians. To them and to their records I am indebted for more than this book shows. I wish also, in this regard, to acknowledge my debt to my friend Vilhjalmur Stefansson, whose influence may more easily be discerned.

As will be seen, I have concentrated chiefly on the less-known parts of Canada, which, in my opinion, are destined, because of their natural wealth, to become the determining factor in its future. I have also attempted to show . . .
