This is, I believe, the first book dealing with a wide range of literary feuds to appear in English since 1814. In it, I have retraced in detail what I believe to be the liveliest feuds between writers of the past few centuries.

The field is an extraordinarily rich one, and I have had to omit some intriguing literary duels because others seemed to me more dramatic and significant. The feuds I have settled upon are British, American, and Russian. My earlier plan to include chapters on German and French feuds was abandoned because the French feuds I explored seemed too shapeless to me to be included in a volume for the general reader, and the German ones struck me as too ponderous for the kind of book I had in mind.
