New Testament Sidelights: Essays in Honor of Alexander Converse Purdy

Excerpt

Dr. Alexander C. Purdy joined the Faculty of The Hartford Seminary Foundation in January, 1923. During most of the period since that date he has served as Hosmer Professor of New Testament in the Department of Bible of the Hartford Theological Seminary. Over the years a considerable number of other Biblical scholars have been associated with him in that Department. Therefore it seemed highly appropriate that these scholars should be invited to contribute to this Festschrift in his honor.

Six of the nine contributors have, at one time or another, been Professor Purdy's colleagues in the Department of Bible: Dr. G. H. C. Macgregor from 1928 to 1933; Dr. Moses Bailey from 1932 to the present; Dr. George Hedley from 1933 to 1934; Dr. W. Kendrick Grobel from 1934 to 1936; Dr. George Johnston from 1947 to 1952; Dr. Harvey K. McArthur from 1948 to the present.

The other three contributors are included for equally compelling reasons. Bishop Gerald Kennedy received his S.T.M. and Ph.D. degrees in New Testament from the Hartford Theological Seminary in 1933 and 1934 respectively, doing his work under Professor Purdy's direction. Dr. Henry J. Cadbury has been a long-time friend and associate and is, like Dr. Purdy, a member of the Society of Friends. In the spring of 1959 Professor Bultmann was the Carew Lecturer at the Hartford Theological Seminary, and he has graciously contributed his third lecture to this collection.

It is our privilege to present this volume to Dr. Purdy as a token of our personal and professional appreciation for the work he has done throughout the years in research and in teaching in the field of New Testament studies.

On behalf of the contributors, HARVEY K. MCARTHUR
