Excerpt

The American Abstract Artists herewith present a fourth in the series of books which the organization has edited in its twenty-one years of existence. The previous publications comprised studies of esthetic problems written by members of the group. For the present edition, by contrast, artists from different parts of the world were invited to write on aspects of the movement in their respective countries. Now that abstract art-currents have permeated to almost every corner of the free world, within a single volume there could obviously be no attempt at inclusiveness; in these pages only reports from the leading centers could find space. Nevertheless it is hoped that -- in such fast-changing times -- valuable information concerning the development of abstract art through 1956 may be permanently put on record. Should it appear that the United States has been accorded more than its proportionate share, it can be readily argued that previous surveys of the subject have tended either to ignore or to abbreviate what has been produced in America; whereas -- numerically at least -- abstract artists in the New World doubtless exceed all others today. It may be noted too that emphasis has been placed on recent developments, as countless previous studies have appropriately featured the noted pioneers. The American Abstract Artists extend thanks to those -- both here and abroad -- who have provided the text for this volume; also to those museums, galleries, and collectors who have so generously permitted reproduction of works in their possession. All opinions expressed are those of the individual writers, and do not necessarily reflect either the views of the organization or of its editors. The miniature color-plates that appear throughout these pages comprise the Twentieth Annual Exhibition of the American Abstract Artists at the Riverside Museum, New York.AAA Publications Committee
