This study was carried out under the auspices of the Organization Behavior and Organization Change Program of the Institute for Social Research. I am grateful for the freedom given me within this program to plan and carry out this study, as well as for the assistance of many persons within the Institute. I owe a special debt of gratitute to Mrs. Carol Slater, acting director of the study, who contributed generously of her time and thought, especially during the planning stages of the research. I am also indebted for technical help at various stages of the study to Dr. Floyd C. Mann, Dr. Donald C. Pelz, Dr. Arnold S. Tannenbaum, and Mr. Edwin H. Blakelock, and for clerical assistance to Mrs. Margaret Nierenberg and Mrs. Betty Sears--all of the Institute for Social Research.

I would like to thank the members of my doctoral committee for their advice and assistance. I am especially grateful to the committee chairman, Dr. Theodore M. Newcomb, for his help at all stages of this research and for his continual willingness to be of service, regardless of personal inconvenience to himself.

I would like to acknowledge too the generous cooperation of the management of the refinery at which this research was carried out, and of the men whom we interviewed at the refinery. Without their interest and aid, this study could not, of course, have been successfully completed.

I wish, finally, to thank my wife, Susan Patchen, for her clerical help, and for her constant interest and encouragement in this research.

MARTIN PATCHEN
