Excerpt

Many friends and colleagues, both in this country and abroad, have helped me with suggestions, references and the loan of books; I should like first of all to express my gratitude to them. Special thanks are due to the staff of the Library of the University of Hull who have borrowed books for me through the National Central Library. The Library of the German Language, London, has also been very helpful. Many of the volumes discussed in the pages that follow are now available in the various university libraries of this country; a number of others have been obtained from libraries in Austria, Germany and Switzerland. Much of the material, of course, is in print at the time of going to press, and obtainable through the usual trade channels.

A certain amount of the text appeared previously in the form of essays and reviews in various journals, for the most part in German Life and Letters. The more substantial of these essays are listed in the 'Select Bibliography'.

I am grateful to the Publications Committee of the University of Hull for including this study in its series.
