Synopsis

The purpose of this book is to share, in rich detail, an understanding of how it feels and what it means to do qualitative research, and to provide support for doctoral students who choose this form of inquiry for their dissertation research.

Excerpt

I was really pleased to see that you hope to include some more detailed letters in your book. What I find exciting about your research is that you'll include as much of our voice as possible--the voice and concerns of people doing or recently finished doing qualitative research. I think I said Bogdan and Biklen (1982) was my favorite all-round decision rules and example book, but it's still several steps removed from actual experience--what we wanted to know and what we wanted changed, what we did.

The draft of your text has been extremely helpful to me at this juncture of my work. I have just begun to dig into the Ely (1991) book; both are an important part of jogging my spirit into the "running" mode necessary to produce the big "D" . . . .I come away from this reading with so many emotions--I can definitely see the value in correspondence and dialogue with others who have been through the maze.

Judith, I can send more information to you should you need more. I would also be pleased to work with you in any form or fashion for this project. I think it is an important one. I believe in qualitative research. It has more 'meaning' to me than statistical data, although I know statistics are important. More books (like Lincoln & Guba's 1985 book) are needed to guide faculty and students in qualitative research decisions. Certainly, it would have helped me!. . . . Happy writing!

I would love to have had your book while doing my dissertation.
