Why are Americans so unpopular abroad?

Why do our so-called Allies, after accepting our billions, resent us personally? Why do those whom we've aided insult us?

What brought about this unhappy relationship? How can we change it?

As a veteran of World War I and an active propagandist for Uncle Sam in World War II, I am vastly concerned with finding the answers to these questions. As a private citizen seeking no special favors and without Government pay or official status, I have become distressingly aware, after 30 crossings of the oceans and traveling the entire globe--Australia and the Iron Curtain excepted--that such resentment, bordering on open hostility, does exist worldwide and it is increasing.

In my 75,000 miles of foreign travel over the past three years, I have diligently sought to find out why; why we have failed so miserably in Europe and in Asia.

The answer, it has seemed to me, cannot be had in the itineraries taken by our Congressmen, Senators and other high officials to places throughout the globe where welcomes are ostentatiously staged and hosts are on . . .
