Excerpt

The volume which now appears for the first time in an English dress under the title "Introduction to the Canonical Books of the Old Testament" is translated from the fifth thoroughly revised edition of my "Einleitung in das Alte Testament" ("Introduction to the Old Testament"), which was first published fifteen years ago (in 1891). It is a source of unqualified satisfaction to me that in its new form the "Introduction" is confined to the Canonical Books of the Old Testament. It has been my endeavour, however, to lay due emphasis on all the important factors that have co-operated in the development of Old Testament . . .
