Excerpt

This book offers a popular account of some scientific aspects of the earth and sun--in special connection with the 1957-58 enterprise called the International Geophysical Year (IGY).

The text, based on four lectures given in October 1958 at The University of Michigan, is addressed in the first place to an American audience. The illustrations, mainly gathered by The University of Michigan Press, are largely taken from American sources, because of ready availability.

I am not expert in all the fields with which this book deals. Hence I have consulted some of the IGY Reporters--as indicated on p. 102--and others, about the text and diagrams.

As well as to the Reporters, I am indebted for advice and information or illustrations to the following: Professor K. E. Bullen, Dr. G. E. R. Deacon, Mr. R. T. Hansen, Dr. William Markowitz, Dr. Helen Dodson Prince, the Royal Society of London, and to other persons, agencies, and sources named in the picture credits.

Finally, I wish to acknowledge many helpful courtesies rendered during the preparation of this book by Dr. Wilbur C. Nelson, Chairman, and other members of the Department of Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering of The University of Michigan, and by the officials of The University of Michigan Press.
