Excerpt

The four lectures comprising this volume were delivered at the Library of Congress on January 9, 16, 23, and 29, 1956, under the auspices of the Gertrude Clarke Whittall Poetry and Literature Fund. They are here presented to a wider audience as a con- tribution to the understanding and appreciation of those modes of literature, produced after the First World War, which have provided educated readers with an especial problem in literacy as well as with a profound reappraisal of many problems in com- mon human experience. Professor Blackmur speaks for himself to those who ask how and why this strangeness evolved in a world of letters.

L. QUINCY MUMFORD, Librarian of Congress
