Most books about sex are designed to warn people about it (i.e. sex education) or to tell them how to improve their performance (i.e. sex manuals). Presumably the inadequacy of the first creates the demand for the second. This book is neither a sex education textbook, nor a sex manual. It is an attempt to take a long hard look at promiscuity, sex without love, casual sex--all those occasions when two people have sexual intercourse together without committing themselves to loving each other for ever or living together for life.

There are good reasons for concern about promiscuity. Clearly it is not a rare activity indulged in by a few deviates. Tens of thousands of people are promiscuous--the actual number depends on how you define the word. But even more important than that, the fear of promiscuity holds back many attempts to remedy the worrying deficiencies in the extent of sex education, the distribution of contraceptives, the operation of the law on abortion and the campaign against VD. People are afraid that the temptations will be too great when attempts are made to reduce the risks of sexual intercourse; and there seems to be common agreement that the biggest temptation of all is the urge to be promiscuous.

Do we need to fear promiscuity? This book is an attempt to answer that question. There is a shortage of factual information because surprisingly little research has been done on the subject of promiscuity. It is disconcerting to find that so little is known about something that is a continued cause for concern. A study of medical and sociological reports shows that, with few exceptions, the phenomenon is dismissed in a few sentences as an unfortunate consequence of a number of avoidable factors.
