Excerpt

I feel that a few words are needed to explain why these Memoirs stop rather abruptly in 1936, and why the short Epilogue was written in advance of the completion of the book.

My husband started these reminiscences about five years before his death. He wrote slowly and with a scrupulous regard for accuracy. During the writing he had a strong conviction that he might not be able to finish the book. The final pages were, therefore, written to conclude whichever chapter proved to be the last.

I should like to take this opportunity of expressing my gratitude to Miss Aileen Dougherty for her invaluable help to my husband during the past twentyfive years.
