Ramón: A Study of Gómez de la Serna and His Works

Excerpt

It is regrettable that a writer such as Ramón Gómez de la Serna is so little known in the English-speaking world. It is regrettable because of all the contemporary Spanish prose writers RAMON, as he is universally known, is in many ways the most representative.

Recently Ramón celebrated the fiftieth anniversary of the publication of his first book. During these fifty years he has written a prodigious amount, always placing himself ahead of his times. Indeed, Ramón has been Spain's enfant terrible for half a century! From the very beginning of his career as a writer he has made a deep imprint in Spanish letters--first, with the iconoclasticism of his teens, later, with his experiments and innovations. As late as 1947, the date of publication of El hombre perdido, we see Ramón still ahead, still a modern among moderns. Yet, he is not as well known or as understood as he should be. Even in the Hispanic world, where his name is immediately recognized, he has not been widely read.

Why has Ramón's obvious genius not been properly recognized? Why has he not been studied more carefully? There are, to be sure, hundreds of articles written on Ramón. Many critics have made short studies of some of his works. He has been widely discussed. In spite of this one feels that his importance has been underrated; that his work has not been thoroughly evaluated; that his position in the over-all picture of contemporary Spanish letters has not been properly determined. It is because of this situation that I have set out to write this work on Ramón. I hope that I shall be able to bring out his most apparent qualities and characteristics, and that by doing so I shall be able to interest more people in reading some or all of his books.
