Piero Della Francesca

Excerpt

The text which follows is not intended to be a full, critical biography of Piero della Francesca but a guide to the appreciation of his work. For this reason it does not examine in detail questions of connoisseurship. No attempt has been made to enumerate Piero's pupils or to estimate his influence: to have done so would have been to overweight the book.

Among many whom I would like to thank for their help are the Earl of Crawford and Balcarres, who, from his great knowledge of Renaissance art, has given advice and encouragement at every stage of the book, Dr. Margaret Whinney, who has kindly read the proofs, and Miss Nicky Mariano, who has answered some difficult questions. As usual, I am indebted to the Warburg Institute for patiently examining the problems I have put to them.

Both author and publisher must express their thanks to Cav. Cipriani for the admirable photographs which he took especially for this book, and which must commend it to amateurs, whatever its other defects.
