It is always pleasant to say 'thank you', and I take this opportunity of expressing my gratitude to various people who have directly or indirectly helped in the production of this book.

First to my wife, whose book it largely is, without whose criticism and patient assistance over vexatious details it would have been a great deal more imperfect, and without whose earlier work on the subject it would hardly have taken shape at all. Whatever is here of value in regard to Keats' 'sources' was lying inaccessibly interred in an unpublished thesis of hers--pyramidally but not otherwise extant--and she urged me to open the pyramid and rifle the tomb.

Secondly, not only to the Boards of Trustees and Overseers, and to the President, of Bowdoin College, U.S.A., whose appointment of me to, and arrangement of my duties during my year's tenure of, the Tallman Visiting Professorship, gave me a period of comparative leisure, unexpected and invaluable; but also to the whole faculty of the College, and especially to the Department of English, for a welcome which made the stranger within the gates almost forget that he was a stranger, and allowed him to occupy his leisure in an atmosphere at once so kindly and so stimulating.

I have also to thank the Marquess of Crewe for allowing me free access to much valuable material; Dr. G. P. Winship of the Widener Library at Harvard for allowing me to examine all the Keats MSS. in the Amy Lowell collection and providing me with all the many photostats that I needed; and Miss Belle da Costa Greene, the librarian of the Pierpont Morgan Library in New York, for providing me with a photostat of some interesting notes by Woodhouse. And I am much indebted to Mr. H. W. Garrod for his benignant and critical interest, and to him and Mr. C. Bailey for saving me from several bad blunders.
