This is a book about the interface among economics, politics, and defense. the contributors have attempted to advance beyond the traditional two-dimensional analyses of defense economics and defense politics to the political economy of defense (PED). the starting point for this broader, more encompassing analysis, consequently, is neither economics nor political science but political economy, a resurgent field of inquiry that has dramatically transformed the way we think about economics and politics, and the interactions between economics and politics.

Political economy of defense research has reached the takeoff stage. in order to ensure that it does indeed take off, an effort has been made here to identify the nature of political economy of defense inquiry and broaden its scope beyond a narrow focus on the economic consequences of military spending. the analytical and empirical investigations that follow are intended to illustrate the broad, encompassing scope of political economy of defense research and contribute to the development of a research agenda. It is also hoped that our efforts will inspire others to join us in advancing political economy of defense inquiry.

Most of the contributors participated in the fora that served as the starting point for this project, the panels I organized for annual meetings of the American Political Science Association and the International Studies Association. the success of those panels, as evidenced by the enthusiastic responses we generated, provided the inspiration necessary to proceed with the endeavor. Still, this project could not have been brought to fruition without the contributors. I would like to thank both those who were "present at the creation" and patiently endured . . .
